With some severe cold weather in Derbyshire over the last few years, we thought it would be helpful to offer some advice on what to do in winter emergencies.
If the frozen pipe hasn't split, thaw it out gently starting at the end nearest the tap, by applying warm hot-water-bottles.
If the frozen pipe has split, open all your cold water taps and flush your WC to drain the system.
It is often the case that in very cold weather the cold water pipes feeding the boiler may freeze, or the 'condensation pipe' taking the natural condensation away from the boiler to an external drain may freeze.
