This type of boiler combines the Central Heating (CH) with the domestic hot water (DHW) in one unit without the need for water storage tanks.
They are able to supply the heating system in a large house and also hot water on demand, when DHW is run off, the combi boiler stops pumping water to the heating circuit and diverts all the boilers power to instantly heating DHW.
Some combis have small internal water storage vessels combining the energy of the stored water and the gas or oil burner to give faster DHW at the taps or increase the DHW flow rate.
If the work cannot be corrected immediately, they'll look to make the installation safe (after receiving your permission to do so), either by disconnecting it or turning off the gas to the affected part of the installation - this is dependent on the severity of the defects.
If a registered engineer has identified a gas related danger in your home, they'll attach a Danger Do Not Use warning label to the dangerous gas fitting and provide you with a warning notice.
The warning notice will provide details of the unsafe situation.
These days when a new boiler is fitted all manufacturers insist upon a regular annual boiler service to comply with their warranty terms and conditions.
A boiler service may consist of a replacement gasket or heat exchanger seal if it is required for safety or stipulated by a manufacturer, this part is not covered under warranty as it would have to be removed for servicing but is not normally needed to be replaced in the first few years anyway.
Always make sure your boiler service engineer is Gas Safe registered, ask to see the photo ID card and check it on the gas safe register website here.
Heating accounts for about 60 per cent of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference.
Modern boilers are more efficient for several reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers.
All well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, but they inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue.
A condensing boiler has a larger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is more efficient.
