A combi (or combination) boiler is an ingenious space-saving idea, and an increasingly popular choice in UK homes.
In fact, combis now account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.
A combi boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler, combined (hence the name) within one compact unit.
Therefore, no separate hot water cylinder is required, offering space saving within the property.
Further benefits of a combi boiler are significant savings on hot water costs and the fact that hot water is delivered through your taps or shower at mains pressure.
Gas appliances should be serviced annually to ensure safe operation, maintain efficiency and can also prolong the life of the appliance, any defects found can be rectified before they could cause any problems.
Our fully trained and qualified engineers will carry out a full service professionally.
They is an increasing problem with concealed flue pipes within ceiling and enclosed spaces.
Asbestos seals in older boilers are also a problem.
The government has issued safety guidelines regarding gas appliances, which should be adhered to at all times.
If you are replacing an older model of boiler, the chances are that you will have a regular (also known as 'conventional') boiler.
A typical regular boiler system incorporates a boiler, extended controls, a hot water cylinder which is often fed by a cold water storage cistern located in the loft and a feed and expansion cistern - also located in the loft.
If you hot water cylinder has an immersion heater (electrically heated) you have hot water back-up, in case the boiler fails.
Poor water pressure on both hot and cold taps, except the cold at the kitchen sink which is main water pressure.
A system boiler, just like a regular (conventional) boiler works on the principle of stored hot water.
However, a system boiler differs from a regular boiler in some important respects.
Firstly, many of the major individual components of the heating and hot water system are built into a system boiler, pump, control valves, pressure vessel, which means that installation is quicker, neater, easier and more efficient.
Secondly, the system boiler removes the need for a feed and expansion cistern which would normally be located in the loft.
It has become fashionable amongst builders of flats and apartments to install modern gas boilers with long ducts for the flues and air intakes concealed behind ceilings or within the fabric of the buildings.
This leads to a problem that doesn't bother the builders, but it DOES affect any Gas Installer working on the appliance at a later date.
It's turning into quite a problem for either Gas Installers or for their customers, depending on the attitude to risk of the Gas installer, and I predict there will be a few high-profile court cases as a result soon.
